Every Engineering student waits for this period of time, the placements, when one’s ‘hard work’ is finally paid off. So it began. But unlike previous years, companies for my branch turned up a bit late. All the trends set in previous years failed too. Many companies recruited from our campus for the first time, the regulars were missing and the company which was supposed to come towards the end of final semester turned up in the pre-final semester itself. But then everything happens for a reason and all i can hope for is that those reasons are meant for our good.
This was the first PPT(pre-placement talk) i attended in the pre-final semester and the presentation was good except the fact that i did not like the job profile (Programmer Analyst something.. i don’t remember very well). Initially i thought of just giving the Written exam like a mock test, was even seated in the examination hall but then decided to walk-off without writing the exam.
It began with the ‘List of shortlisted candidates’ which did not have the names of many of the ‘brains’ of our branch. I was among the 5 shortlisted from my branch (the short listing procedure was unclear). I attended the PPT which was held for all students across India at the same time (Video Conferencing). Again, the job profile did not quite appeal to me.
Honestly, i do not know if they had selected people from our branch in the past. I thought it was purely electronics. But they did and i somehow cleared the aptitude & technical written exams. I had qualified for my first interview. Even the Technical Interview went considerably well. So did the HR GD round.
End result- Bagged a paid Final Semester internship.
Larsen & Toubro
The very next morning (the day after the Honeywell interviews) i gave the written test and cleared it. Interviews were on the same day. My slot was in the evening so i spent a considerable amount of time going through the subjects, preparing for my interviews. I reached the interview venue much before my interview schedule. Those final moments were tense with others narrating their experiences in the two separate interview panels. It seemed that one of the panels was a really tough one to crack. So obviously none of us wanted to end up in that panel. Thankfully, I was called by the other one. As far as i remember, i was not tensed when i entered the room. I can recall that they were smiling. Unlike what happened with others, i was not asked any technical question. I was asked the following 4 questions:
Tell us about your academics.
Why do you want to join this company?
Which field would you want to join?
This would seem a breeze to answer but it was not. I spoke a lot trying my best to justify my words. The interviewers seemed pleased. And so it ended. In just 18-20 mins. Without being asked a single technical question. At the time when i was expecting them to grill me on Technical they said it was over. I did not have much hope. After all my interview was probably the shortest one anyone had that day. The result did not come soon either. It came out two days later. Yes, I was placed. I felt good and bad at the same time. Bad coz quite a lot of friends of mine failed to secure the job.
Maruti Udyog Ltd.
I had wanted to work in Automobile Industry so i decided to sit for Maruti’s placement. It was my final attempt. So i prepared and gave the technical test. The paper went well but i failed to get through to the next round. The good part- most of my friends made it to the next round. Some of them even secured a job.
This exhausted all of my placement attempts (College Rules).
Now, all those who have already been placed need no encouragement. Those who haven’t, need it. So here is something which might interest you.
- None of the people placed in L&T cleared the Maruti written.
Someone told me that i did not get through because i already had L&T and all that college wants is maximum students getting placed. So they directly killed the opportunity in spite of Maruti being many people’s preferred company. Now i don’t believe that the college would do that. But this is something which might strike you.
- Some of the companies which have visited the campus so far have recruited for the non-research services and hence believe that the best of the students would rather do Masters than join their firm. Consequently, they have shown reluctance in picking up the top performing students and pick up the average ones who also satisfy their criteria. There is no proof for this. But there are some evidences of this happening. So just to make you feel better, if you have not secured a job, you might have been thought of as too good for the job.
- The cream has been skimmed. Most of the Top 15 have been placed already which reduces the competition for others to a great extent. And this competition will only reduce as more and more companies turn up. Actually some of the best paying companies are yet to visit the campus. The guys who will eventually get those jobs might actually be panicking presently because of the lack of a job in hand. So if you don’t already have a job, relax and try and overcome your previous mistakes. Prepare for your interviews well enough.
I came across this on facebook:
You can give it a try. Might give you an edge over others.
P.S.: Our destination might already have been decided. You can’t really go against it. So put in your best to net the job you want. If you don’t get it, it might pave the way for a better one. So have faith, sit back & relax and give in your best to whatever you do. You will end up in your right place.
Congrats to all my friends who have a job in hand. Cheers!
